Het vergrote vaderland – en andere breukmomenten in het gebruik van het verleden in Suske en Wiske

Deze bijdrage belicht het gebruik van geschiedenis in de populaire Vlaamse stripreeks Suske en Wiske, van de eerste krantenstroken van Willy Vandersteen uit 1945 tot het studiowerk van vandaag. Niet alleen de medewerkers en de (uitgeef)entourage evolueerden, ook het beoogde lezerspubliek dijde uit, zeker na het aanboren van de Nederlandse markt. Ik behandel vier breukmomenten in de manier waarop de strip omging met actualiteit en verleden: de overgang van krantenstrip naar Tintin-weekbladstrip in 1948, Vandersteens drastische keuze voor het ‘Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands’ in 1963, de marktgerichte koppeling van de avonturen met historische jubilea en andere ‘events’ aan het eind van de jaren 1970, en de narratieve truc, sinds 2011, om de vaste cast van de reeks gedurende een album te transformeren in personages uit het verleden.
