In this reply, Eveline Buchheim and Ralf Futselaar respond to the critical reactions to their book Uit zorg verdreven. Het Nederlandse krankzinnigenwezen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog (2023), which were published in BMGN – Low Countries Historical Review in 2025. They address the methodological approach of their research and the validity of the criticism directed at it. They also briefly reflect on the precarious position of researchers who study this sensitive past with external funding.
This reply responds to the review article written by Cecile aan de Stegge, Lucie Beaufort, Rense Schuurmans, and John Stienen in this journal, you can find the review article here: https://doi.org/10.51769/bmgn-lchr.19498
