This issue focuses on cultural historical approaches of the past. Feike Dietz transports us to the world of Enlightenment religion of the eighteenth century preacher Samuel van Emdre. By means of literary narrative techniques, fictional characters and a mix of genres he successfully gave new life to the stuffy genre of the catechism. The openly anachronistic interpretive framework that Dietz borrows from present-day didactics offers a refreshing accessibility to the eighteenth century religious and pedagogic culture. Today’s mantra of active learning appears to be less unique than has been thought. Looking at it the other way, the diversion through the eighteenth century brings into sharp focus the disciplinary component of such mantras.
The contribution of Tinne Claes and Pieter Huistra also deals with the historicity of didactic strategies. Late nineteenth century public protest against the unlimited scientific use of the corpses of the poor forced the medical faculty in Brussels to adapt. The autopsy was gradually defined as a particularly respectable practice and raised above dissection, which was now reduced to a didactic method. In other words, what appeared to be an internal medical dispute was closely related to new social and cultural sensitivity regarding the dead body.
Both the review article by Antoon Vrints and the forum contributions by Nico Wouters, Kees Ribbens and Ben Wellings are concerned with the commemoration of the centennial of the First World War. This has resulted not only in innumerable public history events in which the competition with the memories of the Second World War (implicitly) play a role, but has also led to actual increase and broadening of historical research.

In dit nummer staan cultuurhistorische benaderingen van het verleden centraal. Feike Dietz neemt ons mee naar de Verlicht-religieuze wereld van de achttiende-eeuwse predikant Samuel van Emdre. Via literaire verteltechnieken, fictionele personages en een mix van genres slaagde die erin het bestofte genre van de catechismus nieuw leven in te blazen. Het openlijk anachronistische interpretatiekader dat Dietz aan de hedendaagse didactiek ontleent, biedt een verfrissende toegang tot de achttiende-eeuwse religieuze en opvoedkundige cultuur. Het hedendaagse didactische mantra van het actieve leren blijkt immers minder uniek dan wel eens wordt gedacht. Omgekeerd laat de omweg via de achttiende eeuw toe het disciplinerend gehalte van dergelijke mantra’s scherp te zien.
Ook in de bijdrage van Tinne Claes en Pieter Huistra gaat het om de historiciteit van didactische strategieën. Laatnegentiende-eeuws publiek protest tegen het ongelimiteerde wetenschappelijk gebruik van lijken van arme mensen dwong de Brusselse medische faculteit tot aanpassingen. De autopsie werd gaandeweg als een bij uitstek fatsoenlijke praktijk gedefinieerd en verheven boven de dissectie, die nu werd gereduceerd tot een didactische methode. Een schijnbaar interne medische disciplinestrijd bleek met andere woorden nauw verweven met nieuwe sociale en culturele gevoeligheden met betrekking tot het dode lichaam.
Zowel het reviewartikel van Antoon Vrints als de forumbijdragen van Nico Wouters, Kees Ribbens en Ben Wellings staan in het teken van de herdenking van honderd jaar Eerste Wereldoorlog. Die heeft niet alleen geresulteerd in talloze publiekshistorische evenementen waarin de competitie met de herinnering aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog (impliciet) wordt aangegaan. Zij heeft ook geleid tot een reële toename en verbreding van het historisch onderzoek.
